Several years ago when I was a high school student, a young lady approached me. She told me that she wanted to be my friend. We had a lot in common and as young girls of about the same age, it did not seem so strange. I was initially surprised but accepted the offer of friendship all the same.
If I was surprised by her desire to be my friend, I was even more surprised when she listed out a set of rules for the friendship. I was amused but as a teenager, I was willing to have a new friend even though it started on a weird note and seemed to be getting weirder by the day.
One day, she was offended. “What was the problem?” I asked, she said I had broken one of her rules. Now I was beyond amused. How do you ask for a friendship and yet sets up the rules of engagement? Shouldn’t I have a say in this relationship?
It wasn’t long before we parted ways as I became a boarding student and went off to school so we went our different ways.
I am glad, I found a more comforting friend. He said, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:29). This is a friend who is not just looking out for what he will benefit from the relationship but rather, how he will lift off your burden and give you rest.
This world is full of unrest, insecurity, hopelessness, bereavement, death, sicknesses, disappointment, devastation, increasing evil, and even more negativity. All these things form a heavy burden of anxiety, fear, guilt, depression, and more. The news every day shows that the world is on the path of destruction and we all need a friend to navigate the increasing chaos that abounds.
This is why you need a true friend. He is a crowned prince. I have it on good authority that He is the Prince of Peace. He stands head and shoulder above all other kings; the undisputed King of Kings. He has a large palace and wants you to be a part of His kingdom. Sadly, only those who believe in him and have a relationship with him can be part of this great provision.
He said; “In my father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also”. (John 14:2-3).
I happily and heartily introduce to you the best friend you can ever have. The One who understands you through and through, the One who has your best interest at heart, the One who loves you beyond any love you have ever experienced, and this best friend is none other than ”Jesus Christ“.
As proof of His great love for you, He went to the cross to die for you. He took your place so that you do not have to die for the sins you are guilty of.
Do you know that despite this great love Christ has shown to you, you have offended Him repeatedly? You have ignored Him for the most part and lived your life with little consideration about Him. You have disregarded His call several times and postponed it till another time.
All the same, He doesn’t segregate or discriminate. He accepts all who will respond positively to this call. But the ball is in your court, He will not force you to be his friend. The moment you make up your mind to accept Him, He will accept you and make you his Beloved.
Here is His invitation card, specially addressed to you; “Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” (Revelation 3:20). Will you open up the door of your heart? I hope you do, for He is the greatest and the best friend through all of eternity.
